Well I decided on Stanford. I might go to Harvard though if they take me off their waitlist (highly unlikely lol).

He's not joking. He's turning down Columbia and Duke among others for Pomona.

yeah, I'm turning down Columbia, Duke, and Georgetown's School of Foreign Service for Pomona. I liked the academic environment/personal attention to be found at Pomona a whole lot more than at my other choices. Also, I am planning on going to graduate school right after college, and grad school prestige > undergrad. Pomona's grad school acceptance rates (especially to schools like Harvard, Yale, Oxford, Stanford, Cambridge etc) are nearly unparalleled, as is their rate for producing PhDs.

It was a difficult decision, especially since Pomona costs slightly more than Columbia for me, but I'm certain I'm making the right one. But who knows, I might get lucky on the Princeton/Harvard waitlists, which could change things.

Yes smile.gif

I think a couple statistics might change your mind slightly about Pomona. For example, only six schools have higher average SAT scores (for enrolled students, not admitted) than Pomona (using last year's data) - the country's three top science-focused schools, and Harvard/Princeton/Yale

1 Cal Tech 1525
2 Harvard 1495
2 Harvey Mudd 1495
2 Yale 1495
5 Princeton 1485
6 MIT 1470
7 Pomona 1455
8 Columbia 1450

(Harvey Mudd is part of the Claremont Consortium and is literally next-door to Pomona and I can take classes there.)

Pomona had the 3rd highest number of Fullbright Awards in the country last year, and far and away the highest number per capita (roughly 1 in 15 graduating students). In addition, Pomona's endowment per student is the highest among liberal arts colleges and the 6th highest in the US.

It was hard to decide, but I honestly think I will come out of Pomona better prepared for graduate school (I can go to Columbia for grad school, but not Pomona). What was especially telling for me is that two other kids I know who got into Columbia/Pomona (one is a legacy, and the other's dad actually teaches at Columbia) are choosing Pomona.

That's good man...and I was thinking mostly the prestige aspect...but you're right it's all about grad school really...and if you won't have a leg down by going to Pomona why not. Do me a favor and live it up as well...don't just study study study. College is the time of your life, it won't get better.

that's the plan w00t.gif

Pomona takes good care of its students...they even provide alcohol for their students (why else have a large endowment?!) tongue.gif
