Angrenost (1876), British level 47 vs. rerric (1767), Dutch level 77

This was an interesting match up on New England that had Angrenost pulling a victory out of what for a short time appeared to be an early game defeat. I was glad to see a good colonial warfare game after the endless stream of FF and merc laming.

Overview:

Both rerric and Angrenost go for a rush with rerric bringing out grenadiers long before Angrenost is ready to assault his TC. Angrenost quickly goes for massed longbows while rerric relentlessly pounded on his TC with his grenadiers. Through some timely arrivals and laugh out loud moments Angrenost is able to pull a victory from defeat with over double the amount of villagers as rerric despite the loss of his TC.

Rerric:

You started out the game grabbing some food treasures that certainly helped boost your age II time. Shift on your envoy allowed quick scouting of the map; it was nice to see him on the move until much later when he was killed giving a good idea of what was happening all over the map. As for the explorer I can't say the same thing as for nearly 2 minutes he was sitting next to a relativly unguarded settler treasure that you needed so badly. You made a decent age II time just before Angrenost and were pumping out grenadiers in no time. Your economy at this point in the game was almost perfectly balanced and allowed you to get units out with maximum efficiency. As for your hussar shipment it probably would have been better for you to target the tame bear attacking your settler instead of the explorer; the forward settler probably wouldn't have died that way. Things were looking good for you as the last of the grenadiers and spearmen took down his TC that is until nearly 20 longbow men showed up and wrecked your party. Then just to add insult to injury you sent your 700 wood to the other side of the map where you had no settlers and that probably cost you the game. Thirsty for wood you sent out a band of settlers to salvage the wood crates but they were quickly annihalated by a group of longbows. With an escort of minutemen you sent out more settlers for some reason; all of the minutemen (who at this point were nearly dead) were killed in a mad charge at a few longbowmen. As soon as you saw his army show up at your forward base that resign button was itching and you just had to click. You had a good early game but your lack of settlers and the lateness of your cavalry eventually set about your undoing.

Pros:
- Nice early food treasures
- Envoy still moving 8 minutes into the game
- Well-balanced eco with not many resources floating around
- Good age up time
- Nice to see you take down his TC

Cons:
- Idle villagers coming out of TC early game
- Explorer idle for quite a while next to a nice treasure
- Good timing for hussars to show up at forward base but bad selection for unit to attack. (Probably could have saved your villager)
- Let him raid with LBs while you were attacking him. This would have been a much better time to use minutemen.
- Sent wood to wrong place (huge mistake cost you the game)
- Wasted minutemen on 3 longbows!!
- Slow villager production end of game saw you with only 12 villagers as opposed to his 33.
- Built a Market but never used it
- Quit way too early. You could have still got some nice xp!! (Spam something for crying out loud!)

Player rating: 4.2/10 (sorry buddy)

Angrenost:

You started out the game with some good herding of the huntables around his base and had some nice explorer micro that helped you grab some of the bigger treasures. It probably would have been better to scout out the area around your base before going to his; there were some good treasures that you didn't even pick up all game right next to your TC. You also made a decent Age II time just behind rerric. There was a bunch of sheep that you left lying around the map that would have boosted your age time even further. As for the longbows the raid you sent them on was good until you walked them right under TC fire and lost most of them; they probably should have retreated after the villagers garrisoned. I would have to say that the highlight of the game was when you brought out your settlers from the TC to attack his grenadiers and killed all of them; if he had of attacked them instead of the TC however you would have lost quite a few; I would not recommend doing that for future games, especially when he brought up the pikemen. In the end the TC was lost but you certainly weren't hurt by it with your giant manor boom going on. A bit of micro with the LBs and the use of minutemen would have ended his attack for sure. A good game on your part left you victorious with over double the amount of settlers as rerric. GG

Pros:
- Good herding at start
- Nice explorer micro
- Effective usage of tame bare to steal treasure and kill the forward settler
- LOL moment: killing all of the grenadiers with settlers
- Nice manor boom that compensated for the lost TC
- Nicely balanced economy for most of the game with not many unspent resources.

Cons:
- Scouting around your base early on would have been better than scouting him out.
- Didnít harvest your sheep all game.
- LB micro and use of minutemen would have saved your TC
- 10 idle villagers for about 20 seconds in early colonial. (200 Villager seconds wasted... ouch!)

Player rating: 6/10

Game Overall 5.5/10

I intend to do all of my reviews in this style until I get a RR position. Then I intend to do all of the better more entertaining games I do in this style. I think it gives much better coverage and feedback than point form or essay style on their own. People get the full story and also get key points to watch out for both in the replay and any games that they play.
