PC Gamer Ranks C&C Games

Just recently the folks over at PC Gamer released a list of the worst-to-best Command & Conquer games, provided with justification on why each game deserves its stated ranking.

Other than a small paragraph mentioning about Zero Hour and a more lengthy explanation for Yuri's Revenge, expansions are not included in the list so do not expect to see Firestorm, Kane's Wrath or Uprising in it. We will not spoil the list for you but there is absolutely no surprise on which game was ranked the worst, and that accolade of course goes to Tiberian Twilight.

Check out the full article over here and tell us if you agree with them on how the games have been ranked!

While the list is interesting and as the old veteran Command & Conquer 4 player, even I agree, that Tiberium Twilight was the worst game and should be at the bottom of the list. However, the main reason for that is it being titled as official command and conquer Tiberium story exclusion. If it would have been spin-off game, as it originally was meant (it wasn't even a Tiberium game at the start), this game would have been a totally different story and gotten totally different criticism. It could have been considered decent multiplayer fighting arena game.

I personally agree that Red alert 2 was probably the best game of them all, but what gave me most childhood memories and about what I have the biggest nostalgia about is Tiberium Sun. That game was just way too great. I never got into CNC 3 and its expansion, though. I never knew why.

I enjoyed the read very much thank you for sharing. Makes me miss C&C even more than I already do. You can quibble with the ratings if you want to, each of us would have a different list to one degree or another but RA2 and Generals were totally and completely awesome in my book. I would flip the order of those two on my list but goodness I've had so much fun over the years playing both games it's all good.

I wish I played Zero Hour online. All the C&C's up till Tiberium Wars I'd only played skirmish and the campaigns. From all the VoD's I've watched Zero Hour really stands out as a winner.

Can't say my time wasn't well spent playing Battlefield 2 though tongue.gif

With lists such as these, I always wonder how much nostalgia affects ratings of those game.

I always find it hard to compare games what has nostalgia value vs just purely how good it is. For example, if I rate any c&c game with games what was probably one of my first games ever, which is Little Big Adventure 2, then lba2 wins by far margin.

I guess that is also why CNC favourite order will be different for everyone. For an example: I bet those who played ra1 and cnc1 back in the day, might have them on the top list. For me, however, since I never played them, they mean absolutely nothing. My list would be like: Tiberian sun, red alert 2, red alert 3, CNC 4 and then others.

Red Alert 3 is so under appreciated. Everything he said about RA3 was just silly.

It's almost as if the people who write these things don't even play the games...

Well that article is clearly written by someone who has no idea what he's talking about.

But I suppose that's the standard for people who write about games.

Like cnc3 was too much like ''tiberium sun''? Didn't add anything new?
First of all, it's ''tiberian sun'' and second, cnc3 plays almost exactly like Red Alert 2, not like tiberian sun. Especially in 1.00-1.04 scorp/pred spam era. That was fine for me cause I love Ra2, but it was certainly one of the complaints about cnc3... that it wasn't more like tiberian sun.

They still hold up surprisingly well.
The only thing that feels dated to me are the hotkeys (or often times lack there of).
It's like 16-bit (or even 8-bit) console games still being cool to this day, it just fits that game and the 2.5d type style with sprites etc can still look beautiful as well.

Like Ra2 genuinely still looks better than new rts games like 8-bit armies.
And of course plays better as well.
I think 2.5d really fits rts, just like it really fits fighters.

What is the relative new fight game that looks the best?
To me it's Guilty Gear Xrd, which actually is 2.5d they used old thinking of making a game but with modern techniques.

A rts game with super high res sprites would be so sick and would look so much better than anything we see in rts games now.

TIBERIAN SUN! is the best

Ok, small cap. Tiberian Sun.

Hover MLRS mission escorting 4 engineers to recapture base in the winter base where Nod territory is.

Artillery, always need to clear those to win the missions.

Ghost stalker, hehe....

And of course, the mass titans rush. Die u Nod =)

ok, my top list would be

1. kane's wrath (i really do) (partly to please the community)
2. CNC3
3. Tiberian sun =)

To be honest I agree with some of this list, disagree with the rest.
RA2 is where it's at, no doubt about it, but CnC3 and KW deserve to be higher, and I would personally put Generals right above RA3, nothing higher.

I have to agree with Technique a bit here in that the mainstream gaming publications often do not show the level of familiarity with both the gameplay and lore of the C&C franchise as us fans and dedicated players of the franchises do.

So what we often get is just a superficial review from a casual fan's perspective and not a thorough examination of the gameplay and intricacies of each game.

On a personal note I'm torn between Tiberian Dawn for how hard it was, and of how so little games now have such a difficulty level like that, and on Tiberium Wars which was truly a comeback moment for C&C back in 07 with all the hype that surrounded it
