I think a timer will be great.

Like Terry Bogard points out, the greatest purpose of the clock will be to teach BOs to less experienced players. Furthermore, timestamps can assist in replay discussions.

Regarding the clock being too big of a focus point, I disagree. Using the clock in a competetive match to make decisions is fundamentally a bad idea. You are way better off focusing 100% on instant macro, consistent micro, the minimap and quickly reacting to whatever you scout. You shall never go down on these factors because you want to spend ~10% of your focus on a clock.

I see no reason to hide the clock at any time - it serves good purposes. It should not have significant influence on a competetive match but it is a 'nice-to-have' feature - especially for observers, replay viewers and newcomers.

Yes. There is no reason against it.

If you can hook the game at a function call like gameStart() you could calculate your clock and show it with d3d.

I always wanted to have an excuse to do some kind of graphics programming so I'll probably look into it Sunday.

There is no need to use programming for this. It can be done via map scripting.

Agreed. Usefulness yes or no....even if it would be completely useless - thats no reason to not put it in.

I agree. You could also make a designated hotkey to switch it on or off, so players who don't use it can remove it from their screen easily.

That might be difficult, but maybe not impossible. Getting the clock to show up in-game(via map scripting) is one thing, but setting a dedicated hotkey for it is something which might be difficult. We will see.

It's not about programming. This can be done from scripting the map to have a timer .

I believe the game is programmed to have all timers located in that area.
