The ESWC 2011 is over!

By Danelaan - 26th October 2011 - 10:02 AM

As you may already know, the second official Dota 2 LAN tournament took place earlier this week, with a prizepool of $22,000. The Electronic Sports World Cup 2011 is a yearly event in Paris and many competitive games hold a tournament there. After the success of The International, Valve's tournament at the GamesCom, in August, the ESWC 2011 decided to make the switch from DotA to Dota 2!

The tournament began on Sunday. The first stage was a groupstage: the 12 teams were divided into 2 groups, and each team had to face every other team of the group in a Bo1. The top 2 teams of each groups would then qualify for the playoffs. Sunday was Group 1's day: featuring many famous teams - the Bolivian team being the only one that didn't play The International - some surprises were expected, with reason. The Danish team Monkeybusiness, formerly known as Nevo, who were less than impressive during The International, won all their games in a pretty impressive way while the Russians from Moscow 5 and the Chinese team EHOME tied with 3 games won. However, since EHOME won their game versus Moscow 5, it was decided that they would be the ones to advance to the playoffs.
Then came Monday and with Monday, the second Group in which could be found Natus Vincere (aka Na`Vi), the winners of The International and obvious favourites for the tournament as well as Orange Esports, an impressive Malaysian team given to be one of the best teams at the event and definitely among the favourites. While everyone thought this Group's result would be quite obvious, the Serbians from GamersLeague took everyone aback by performing a perfect cleanup of the groupstage, coming out first, even defeating Na`Vi, who came out second, thus also qualifying for the next stage.

The last day of the ESWC 2011 saw the final phase of this highly expected tournament. The Semifinals were to be played in Bo1, while the Grand Finals would be a Bo3. The first semifinal saw EHOME take out the Serbian team GamersLeague in a pretty impressive fashion - and much better plays from the Chinese, compared to their games on Sunday while the Danes from Monkeybusiness were defeated by Na`Vi, even though they dominated the game early on. EHOME and Natus Vincere met again in the Grand Finals - remember that they also faced each other in the Grand Finals of The International - in which the Chinese were once again defeated by the Ukrainian team - though they didn't even take a game time since Na`Vi won two games to nothing. Meanwhile, GamersLeague took out Monkeybusiness for the 3rd place.

ESWC 2011 results :
1st - ukraine Na`Vi - $12,000
2nd - china EHOME - $6,000
3rd - serbia GamersLeague - $4,000
