Greetings from Mission Control everyone! With the release being just over a week away, hype for the game is growing with each passing day. Let's summarize what we've learnt over the last weeks.
Videos
There have been regular livestreams between developers to keep everyone updated on the progress of Grey Goo. If you haven't watched them yet, be sure to check them out in our
Videos Section!
Other Grey Goo video updates include Dev diaries and basic faction introduction videos. These videos are released weekly by the Grey Goo Team. So far, the
Beta and
Human factions have been released. The videos provide a short introduction to the basic mechanics of the faction, as well as the units it has to offer. To top it all off, a short story summarizes the plot of the game. The mysterious storyline is exciting to say the least!
Forum updates
Now moving on to the contents of discussion from the official forums and crucial news released by the Grey Goo Team:
Grey Goo will be released on Steam as mentioned by the developers themselves on the official site. In fact the game is already on preview in the Steam Store.
One of the fans on the official forum found an easter egg - A possible steelbox release (limited edition) of the game. Possibly users will be able to choose between a hardcopy CD version of the game, or a digital sale of the game on steam. But one thing is certain - The game will have its main mode of operation and activation through Steam.
In addition, there has been some questions about available game modes on release. The developers officially clarified that there will be 3 game modes: Standard, Annihilation and Destroy HQ.- Standard requires players to destroy the HQ and all Production structures and Refineries in order to win the game.
- Annihilation requires players to wipe out the enemy's existence completely - In other words, you have to destroy all the opponent's structures and units in order to win.
- Destroy HQ, you simply need to destroy the opponent's HQ in order to win. In case of the Goo you have to kill all the Mother Goos. Do note that once the HQ is destroyed, the remaining units on the map will be exposed and visible to the enemy.
Maps
Community manager Berek
released four sample maps that would be included in the list of standard maps provided upon launch. Three of the four maps shown are symmetrical, so it is likely that most maps will be the same as well to provide for a balanced gameplay. Generally the maps have a good mixture of flanks, open spaces and tight corners with some useful brush spots to hide and ambush in. It is all up to you as the commander to utilize the terrain to the maximum effectiveness for the victory of your faction.
Another key feature of Grey Goo would be the availability of a map editor! Yes that's right, avid mappers and fans can use their creativity to brainstorm wild exciting, unique and dynamic maps for the community to play with. We at
GGReplays.com surely will organize mapping contests once the game gets up and running, so stay tuned for more events and activities we will bring to the Grey Goo Community!
Replays and Observer mode
With more awesome news, the Grey Goo team has also officially announced that
Replays and a Observer mode will be made available to the game! While they will not be released together with the game on the 23rd, they will become part of the game eventually.
Finally, if you still need additional feedback regarding the game, you can read a few previews on
Rock, Paper, Shotgun,
IGN and
RTSGuru.
That is all we have for now. Make sure to stay tuned as the clock ticks closer to its date of release on
23rd January 2015. We will be working hard to give you the latest news updates and strategy content in the coming weeks. Hope to see you on the battlefield soon Commander!
