Heroes of Newerth

The Heroes of Newerth Beginner's Guide

Warding

Watchtower

There must be some way out of here.

Watchtower is a new map with a lot of hilly terrain that can be taken advantage of. It's not played very often, but the lane advantages a team can gain early from the hills on the side lanes makes it almost necessary to begin warding them very quickly.

Left Rune

IPB Image
Sees the rune and plenty of the area on either side of the river.

IPB Image
Again, sees the rune and plenty of the area on either side of the river.

Right Rune

IPB Image
Great vision of the area around the rune. Almost certain to see anyone moving from middle to right, or vice versa.

IPB Image
Good spot if your a Hellbourne middle player, as it sees uphill of the river and the rune.

Hellbourne jungle

The Hellbourne jungle is very easy to keep an eye on because of the large plateau in the middle of it that almost gives a single Ward full vision of all the spawn camps.

IPB Image
Pretty much anywhere on this high platform will see almost all the Hellbourne neutral spawns.

IPB Image
This sees the last spawn camp if you really feel the need to keep an eye on all of them.

Legion Jungle

The Legion junlge is only slightly more difficult to see than the Hellbourne's, and can also mostly be watched with just one Ward.

IPB Image
Sees about half of the Legion jungle area.

IPB Image
Can help protect a jungler, by showing the entrance to the jungle closest to the left lane.

Lanes

Run to the hills.

Although not pictured here, the hills in the middle of the side lanes make for decent early Ward-placement if you find the enemy taking advantage of the fog of war by hiding on top of them a lot.

Hellbourne

IPB Image
You can place this from the secret shop area, you might have to cut down a tree or two.

IPB Image
Unfortunately, there's no markers to easily see how close to the tower you can place this Ward.

IPB Image
Not exactly the safest spot to put a Ward, but if you really feel the need to see that front middle tower, you might not have much choice other than braving the danger to place it.

IPB Image
Run around the trees, put Ward here, again no real marker to judge the distance so try not to put it too close to the tower.

IPB Image
Not safe placement, whoever places this would have to run through the Hellbourne jungle and into plain sight of the tower to place this. That would probably mean that the hero would die.

IPB Image
You can run around the trees and out of sight of the tower to place this high up Ward, to see most of the area surrounding the tower.

Legion

IPB Image
Secret Shop, cut down a few trees, put it where the trees were.

IPB Image
Sees the tower really well, but can be dangerous to place as this hill is a good spot from which the Legion can ambush Hellbourne players pushing the tower.

IPB Image
Good sight on the first tower, and decent sight of the second one. Safe to place if enemies are at the tower, because it can be placed from an uphill position.

IPB Image
Dangerous to place. Good vision on second tower.

Bases

Ok, I lied. It totally makes you a voyeur.

Unlike Forests of Caldavar, there's not much inside the bases to block a Ward's line of sight. So placing it anywhere inside the base will give it great vision. Just be careful not to place them too close to the towers.

And now we look at some nice ward placement spots on a 3v3 map Darkwood Vale.
