Heroes of Newerth Pandamonium Guide

By L3g3nd4ry - 9th December 2010 - 17:46 PM

A potent and deadly Legion warrior, Pandamonium is a powerful semi carry who relies on Physical damage and displacement to quickly assassinate an enemy hero or cause great chaos with his stuns. With two of his skills relying on his base Strength, Pandamonium becomes stronger as the game progresses and is able to continuously increase his damage output and health pool.

Pandamonium

Fun facts!
Pandamonium's name could have been derived from four sources:
  • A play on the word Pandemonium which means a state of extreme confusion and disorder; much like the hero's play style.
  • An old 1982 cartoon show that shared a similar name (Video).
  • The Warcraft 3 Panderen Brewmaster who had a famous command response of "I BRING PANDAMONIUM".
  • He's a panda. Duh.

1. Skills Descriptions

Flurry
    Activiation
  • Facing - Enemy Units
  • Type: Physical
  • Range: 100
  • Radius: 150
  • Mana cost: 30
Deals Physical damage equal to one attack with +15/25/35/45% base damage to targets in front of self. Self and targets are pushed forward 100 units.

Each use of this ability consumes 1 charge. 1 charge is restored every 4 seconds. Maximum of 1/2/3/4 charges.
Usage:
The extra damage is very significant and the push back ensures that the target is "disabled" for the duration of the Flurry. The splash damage (the ability affects all units in front of you, not just the first one) is great for farming and allows you to keep you gold per minute high while ignoring farming items (eg. Runed Axe). Additionally the skill is not very mana intensive and has a very low cooldown, which supports spamming it for even better farming.

Flick
    Activation
  • Target Unit - Enemy Organic Units
  • Type: Physical
  • Range: 350
  • Mana cost: 85
  • Cooldown: 24/22/20/18 seconds
Throws target unit behind self. Upon landing, applies Flicked to target for 6 seconds.

    Flicked Effects
    -2/-4/-6/-8 Armor
Reduces movement speed by 20/30/40/50% initially, recovering to full speed over 6 seconds.
Usage:
This skill looks neither spectacular or powerful but it is very useful and very much needed on Panda.
It allows you to it allows you to force an enemy into a position of your choice, facilitating more effective use of both Flurry and, crucially, Cannon Ball. It is also a very good skill to initiate ganks as you can separate enemies very easily, in addition to being a good chasing skill because you can keep fleeing opponents in your range. The armour reduction it provides, is also valuable both to yourself and your team, allowing you to increase your damage output as the game goes on.
Note: Flick breaks channeling abilities.

Cannon Ball
    Activation
  • Target Position - Enemy Units
  • Type: Physical
  • Range: 600
  • Radius: 200
  • Mana cost: 100
  • Cooldown: 14 seconds
Throw self toward target location over 0.95 seconds. Upon landing, damages enemies in a 200 radius for 100/175/250/325 Physical damage and stuns them for 0.75/1.25/1.75/2.25 seconds.

Slows self by 60% for 2 seconds if no enemies in a 200 radius are hit.
Usage:
This skill is what will will either make or break a Pandamonium player, and it one of the most difficult Skills to land in the entire game. Unfortunately unlike other skills that are difficult to land (Valkyrie Arrow, Engineers Keg) this skill is not just difficult to land: you are also left slowed and out-of-position if you miss. If you learn how to hit, however, you get a large AOE physical stun which deals a very decent amount of damage and can be combined with your other spells to unleash a deadly volley of attacks. The best way to utilise Cannon Ball is directly after Flicking an enemy since the armor reduction will stack with the physical damage. However this may take some practice to perfect.

Face Smash
    Activation
  • Target Unit - Enemy Organic Units
  • Type: Physical
  • Range: 100
  • Channeling time: 4.5 seconds
  • Mana cost: 100/175/250
  • Cooldown: 120/100/80 seconds
Applies Face Smash to target for the duration of the channel. Deals one attack every second over the duration, for a total of 4 attacks.

Each attack deals +30/70/120% base damage.

    Face Smash Effects
    Stunned
    Revealed
Usage:
This is Panda's deadly disable that ignores all forms of magic immunity to cause unmatched physical damage to an enemy hero. This ultimate is without doubt the most feared spell by enemy carries as it allows Pandamonium to jump, flick and disable them even if they have Shrunken Head. Additionally this spell becomes stronger the more strength items you eventually will buy, so the damage constantly increases. Once coupled with a Shrunken Head of your own, you become a vital asset late game, since the enemy carry will be open for a kill for a whole 4.5 seconds.

2. Skill Build and Usage

2.1 Beginner's Build

  1. Flick
  2. Cannonball
  3. Cannonball
  4. Flick
  5. Cannonball
  6. Facesmash
  7. Cannonball
  8. Flick
  9. Flick
  10. Flurry
  11. Facesmash
  12. Flurry
  13. Flurry
  14. Flurry
  15. Stats
  16. Facesmash
Flick is your essential initiation spell which allows you to follow up with an immediate Cannonball on your armourless enemy; which greatly increases its damage. Cannonball is maxxed to increase stun duration alongside Flick to give that insane -8 armor and lower cooldown. For a starting player this is as versatile build that allows you to get plenty of practice landing Cannon Ball. However for the seasoned Pro there is always this alternative:

2.2 The Power Build

  1. Flick
  2. Cannonball
  3. Flurry
  4. Flurry
  5. Flurry
  6. Facesmash
  7. Flurry
  8. Cannonball
  9. Cannonball
  10. Cannonball
  11. Facesmash
  12. Flick
  13. Flick
  14. Flick
  15. Stats
  16. Facesmash
This is the favoured build for Pandamonium at higher levels of play as it allows him to farm quickly but also cause severe damage once hes level 7. A combination of Flick, Cannon ball, Facesmash and then flurry ensures you at least one kill, if not two, early on. However this build does require more mana management and, most importantly, nailing every spell spot on.

3. Item Build

3.1 To Start With:

- Crushing Claw
- Mark of the Novice
- Minor Totem
- Minor Totem
1 x Health Potion
1 x Rune of the Blight (3)

Standard build for Pandamonium since the introduction of the Blood Chalice which allows side lane players to utilise its mana giving properties more frequently than the old classic Bottle. The additional +5 strength provides a small HP and attack damage boost alongside the +5 intelligence for a greater mana pool.

3.2 Then..

- Ghost Marchers
- Blood Chalice
- Power Supply
- Bracelet
- Mighty Blade

Blood Chalice and Power Supply Combo is a must have on Panda as they solve all your mana problems for the rest of the game in addition to providing those vital stats. Ghost Marchers are the preferred boots as they allow you to quickly chase down an enemy hero with Flick, however Steamboots are a great alternative for the additional +10 strength. The Bracelet and Mighty Blade are vital for your mid game damage and provide the all important stats to your health pool.

3.3 Mid-late Game Items

- Shrunken Head
- Null Stone

That Shrunken Head and Null Stone are a must have for every game, a 4.5 second uninterrupted disable breaks enemy carries and allows you to jump into any situation care free. This is they beauty of Panda: He can annihilate a fully farmed carry and open the door for his team to jump in and win the fight.

3.4 Situational Items

- Portal Key

A handy item to have and can make your life a lot easier when facing multiple ranged carries that don't come within flick range. Additionally helps to chase, initiate and escape: but only get it if you you really need it.

3.5 Luxury Items

- Behemoth's Heart

If you have enough money left over at the end of the game, pick this up: it provides an enormous boost to both your damage and survivability, allowing you to simultaneously devastate the enemy team and tank the large amounts of damage such a dangerous carry tends to attract.

4. Hero Specific Strategies and Techniques

4.1 The Basic Skill Combo

A simple but effective combo to play Pandamonium is the following:
  1. Use Ghost Marchers to chase up to an enemy hero and use Flick on it
  2. As you leap forward immediately queue up Cannon Ball directly behind you.
  3. Cast Facesmash on your now stunned target
  4. After the 4 seconds (or 4 smashes) press Q 4 times to deliver the killing blow.

4.2 Flick or Cannon Ball for Initiation

The main drawback to the basic combo is that experienced players will stay well clear of your Flick making it extremely difficult to perform a successful gank unless you have a Haste rune. So as an alternative you can hide ontop of cliffs, in trees or in blind spots and then use Cannon Ball first followed up by Flurries, a Facesmash and then Flick to catch any stragglers. Once you have Portal Key you can easily decide which skill to use first for the situation at hand.

4.3 Your Role in a Team Fight

Think of yourself as combination of Pestilence and Succubus: Use your Cannon Ball to stun a group of enemy heroes, Flick a priority target out of the fight and then pound them into submission with a Face Smash & Flurry combo.
