Heroes of Newerth Witch Slayer Guide

By Lord Zod - 4th December 2010 - 12:29 PM

Witch Slayer is a support hero whose main role is stunning the opposition before they can run in and do any damage. His mana drain ensures that you can throw as many stuns at the opposing heroes without worrying about running low on mana. Witch Slayer’s ultimate is a powerful nuke that has a devastating effect on the opponent.

Hero Description: No city is more pious in its worship of Sol than Arasunia, and no man is more fervent among its zealous citizens than the Witch Slayer. Although he is viewed with uncertainty by the Beast shamans and human sorcerers in the Legion, his combat prowess and holy powers make him a mighty ally. Wielding a musket and a bladed icon of Sol, he not only can hold his own in battle, but also can sap his enemy's strength and turn any ground into sacred territory.

1. Skills Descriptions

Graveyard
Most at home on holy ground, the Witch Slayer creates a temporary Graveyard in front of himself. Enemy units caught in its creation suffer the consequences.

Activation:
Type: Magic
Range: 500
Mana Cost: 100 / 120 / 145 / 170
Cooldown: 12.0 Seconds

Creates a Graveyard for 700 units in the target direction. Any enemies hit will fly in the air for 0.52 seconds and are stunned for 0.5 / 1 / 1.5 / 2 seconds when they land, taking 60 / 130 / 200 / 260 Magic damage.

Usage: Graveyard is Witch Slayer's most useful skill when in team fights, it stuns all enemies in a line and does a damage. This can give your team the few seconds they need to turn the fight around.

Miniaturization
The Witch Slayer has mastered the use of the gem socketed into his glove, letting him shrink and render use an enemy for a short time.

Activation:
Type: Magic
Range: 500
Cast Time: 0.9 Seconds
Mana Cost: 110 / 140 / 170 / 200
Cooldown: 13.0 Seconds

Applies Miniaturization to the target enemy for 1.25 / 2 / 2.75 / 3.5 seconds.

Miniaturization Effects:
Perplexed
Silenced
Disarmed
Smaller!

Usage: Miniaturization is a key escape mechanism that allows Witch Slayer to escape from most sticky situations. It renders the enemy useless for up to 3.5 seconds at level 4. Combine this with the 2 second stun from your Graveyard skill and you can be sure that your enemy doesn't stand a chance.

Power Drain
Over the years the Witch Slayer has learned how to drain the power of his enemies for his own use.

Activation :
Type: Magic
Range: 600 / 650 / 700 / 750
Channelling Time: 0.9 Seconds
Mana Cost: 10
Cooldown: 25.0 / 20.0 / 15.0 / 10.0 Seconds

Applies Power Drain to target for duration of the channel. The Witch Slayer gains mana equal to the mana drained.

Power Drain Effects:
20 / 40 / 60 / 100 mana drained per second.

Usage: Power drain basically has two uses: it can be used to replenish your mana, but mainly its role is to make sure that dangerous heroes with low mana pools are unable to use their skills, whether it be to escape, gank, farm or, in some cases, heal.

Silver Bullet
With no other option left, the Witch Slayer fires a Silver Bullet from his gun at the target enemy. The impact usually leaves them in many small pieces.

Activation:
Type: Magic
Range: 700
Cast Time: 0.9 Seconds
Mana Cost: 200 / 420 / 650
Cooldown: 150.0 / 90.0 / 55.0 Seconds

Deals 500 / 650 / 850 Magic damage to your target.
This ability can be boosted by Staff of the Master.

Staff Effect: Increases damage from {500,650,850} to {600, 800, and 1025}.

Usage: Silver Bullet is Witch Slayer's nuke, it hits like a truck and can be made even more powerful with Staff of the Master. It is used for finishing off fleeing heroes or for weakening tank like heroes so that your carries can run in and do their thing.

  18. Stats
In most situations you will never require Power Drain before level 6. It is much more useful to your team if you go dual disables as soon as possible to set up early kills or saves. The reasoning behind leveling Graveyard before Minimization is that Graveyard stuns multiple targets in contrast to the single target disable of Minimization. Of course, you will also need to pick up your ultimate, Silver Bullet, as soon as it becomes available, as it is an extremely powerful tool early game for ensuring a kill early game, either for you or one of your team-mates. In the higher-level play, Power Drain is used primarily to prevent the opposition from using abilities against you rather than as a source of mana.

3. Item build

3.1 To start with:

If you are mid or in a lane where the other hero will be off jungling most of the time go with:
Pretender's Crown x 2
Health Potion x2
The two Pretender's Crowns will give you the slight advantage and stat boost required to survive by yourself. The two health potions will keep you from having to return to home base to early on in the game.

Otherwise go with:
Runes of the Blight
Health Potion
Minor Totem x3
Monkey Courier
The Runes of the Blight and the Health Potion will provide you with enough healing to prevent early retreats back to base. The Minor Totems will provide you with a very cheap stat boost early on in the game. The Monkey Courier is asset to the team, enabling them to receive their item purchases without leaving their lane - just make sure you remember to share it with them!

3.2 Then..

Striders
Winged Courier
Homecoming Stone
Ward of Sight
Power Supply or Blood Chalice
The Striders provide a huge speed increase making it easy for Witch Slayer to travel between lanes. The Winged Courier improves upon the Monkey Courier, making it even faster and adding a shield that makes it invulnerable for a short time - it's a huge upgrade and you should buy it in every game. Homecoming Stones enable you to almost instantly teleport to towers to save or deny them. Wards of Sight are used to provide constant vision over certain terrain such as the rune spawns and important areas in the jungle. Power Supply provides a constant mana and health supply as long as you are near the action. If you are up against a lane that does not really rely on using lots of skills such that you will not be getting many charges on your Power Supply, and hence find yourself short of mana, you may opt to go with a Blood Chalice.

3.3 Mid-late game items

Kuldra’s Sheepstick
Void Talisman
Astrolabe
Nome’s Wisdom
Kuldra’s Sheepstick provides a large mana regeneration and stat boost as well as being able to transfigure an enemy for 3.5 seconds during which they cannot attack or cast spells and are slowed. Void Talisman will prove essential against melee Heroes as it renders you immune to physical damage but more vulnerable to magic users during activation. Astrolabe is a great support item as it enables you to heal your teammates and has an aura that increases health regeneration. Nome’s Wisdom’s stat increase in decent but what you want from it is its aura, which increases Mana regeneration and gives armour to all friendly within radius.

4. Hero Specific Strategies and Techniques

4.1 General Advice

You should not auto attack, last hitting get you much more experience.
You should not use Silver Bullet to steal kills from other heroes and certainly not from carries.
You should not chase after escaping Heroes behind enemy towers, Witch Slayer is quite squishy and will easily be taken out by the towers and other Heroes.
Note: This advice is a general set of rules that should be followed, but depending on different situations, you may feel the need to ignore some of these.

4.2 Ganking

During a gank, Witch Slayer is very useful with his stun and disable. He is able to almost completely neutralise an opponent long enough for the other heroes to finish him off, and the powerful nuke from Silver Bullet is capable of taking a big chunk out of even the strongest opponent's HP pool. Witch Slayer should never use his ultimate to last hit enemy heroes unless alone, these kills should be left for others on your team who need them more.

4.3 Assisting

You will be an essential asset to the team; you will have to be there to make the critical stun that will enable team members as well as yourself to escape near death situations. It also deals fairly high damage for what it’s worth, and is a very easy stun in comparison to those of heroes like Pyromancer. Witch slayer should also make use of Homecoming Stones and later on a portal key to help team members during ganks and to escape.
