Tip of the Week #108 - Understanding the Enlightened

By EnEightened - 27th April 2012 - 16:10 PM

Greetings commanders! In this tip we are going to tell you about The Enlightened, and what they really are. Because they're not what you think they are. And also we are going to tell you how to use The Enlightened properly and explain a few strategies which feature them.

Understanding The Enlightened

The Enlightened has the weirdest armor of the game. This unique armor is a blessing and a curse for them. Because of their unique armor it is hardly considered to be an infantry unit. They are more like miniature tanks. This makes them the second toughest infantry unit against the gun fire type, right after commandos. This is the blessing of its armor. Note that although they survive longer than other units, they are still vulnerable to upgraded gun fire. The bad thing about their armor is that it's weak against cannon fire. They take heavy damage under Juggernaut, railgun and even rocket fire. They should not be compared with Zone Troopers or any other infantry unit. The Enlightened has no counterpart on any of the other factions. Therefore, its role in battle is totally different from that of Zone Troopers. It's a big mistake to consider The Enlightened as a direct combat unit, because they are not cost effective with their damage per second to price ratio. The Enlightened's real strength is its excellent EMP Blast ability and high movement speed. The Enlightened is most efficiently used as a support unit.

Strategies

As was mentioned before, The Enlightened is a support unit. The Awakened is much more cost effective than The Enlightened in defense against epic units, despite them being extremely bugged. On the other hand when dealing with ranged units like Juggernauts, Spectres and Beam Cannons; The Awakened is mostly useless due to its low speed. This is where The Enlightened shine. Thanks to their high speed and toughness, they can run through the battlefield and launch their EMP blast with high success rate. For example using them against a pack of Beam Cannons might simply turn the tide of the battle. Since the EMP'd units can't move for a long time you can bombard them with couple of Specters. The same goes for Juggernauts or Specter duels.

They're Speed Demons!
Use a couple of squads of Enlightened to kite around the enemy's forces and disable heavy, slow moving vehicles with their EMP Blast ability. This will allow your forces to attack with little to no resistance from the enemy's stronger units.

The Enlightened as a Defensive Unit

If you like to turtle and play defensive, using The Enlightened in Reckoners adjacent to a War Factory or Redeemer Engineering Facility might be a better option and more cost effective than using Reckoners with Militant Rocket Squads. When the Supercharged Particle Beams upgrade is purchased, The Enlightened and Militant Rocket Squads have approximately same damage per second to price ratio. This makes The Enlightened more cost effective when using in Reckoners because of the limited garrison space of the Reckoner. You can also evacuate your Enlightened squads individually for using their EMP Blast, and then garrison them back inside the safety of the Reckoner. This keeps your Enlightened squads alive and allows you to still disable incoming enemy units.

The Enlightened's EMP ability compared to The Awakened's and Grenadier Squad's

The Enlightened has the largest EMP effect area, along with Grenadier Squad. They both have 30 seconds cooldown time for their abilities. The only thing that the Grenaiders are better than the Enlightened for is EMP effect time. The Enlightened's EMP effect time is 8 seconds, on the other hand Grenadiers have a 10 second effect time. Lastly The Awakened's EMP effect time is 5 seconds. The Enlightened has a much better EMP launch speed and respond time than the Grenadier. Considering EMP is used against tanks and The Enlightened is an anti-tank unit, and Grenadier is not. Finally, taking into account The Enlightened's higher speed and toughness makes The Enlightened the best EMP unit in Kane's Wrath.

Countering The Enlightened

The Enlightened are very vulnerable to Armour Piercing upgraded Hammerheads, mass Venoms, any kind of flame weapon, Buzzers, Snipers and Devastators. When playing against the Marked of Kane, as GDI or ZOCOM it might be a good idea to garrison your MARV with a Sniper Nest, so you can out range any incoming Enlightened squads. Also Hammerheads can be garrisoned with Snipers and can kite over the battlefield to take down The Enlightened safely. The Scrin have the hardest time countering The Enlightened. It is not difficult to kill them, but to prevent them to launch their EMP. They are fast enough to run away from buzzers and The Scrin factions have no fast air unit like Hammerheads or Venoms. Corrupters might come handy in this situation.

In conclusion, The Enlightened are a very powerful unit when used correctly and will be able to cause a lot of damage in the right hands. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and play some Marked of Kane!
