Tip of the Week #109 - Proper use of booby traps

By Carnavas - 2nd August 2012 - 11:08 AM

Greetings, Commanders! Today we shall learn some neat tricks to maximise the effectiveness of our friendly Nod saboteurs on the fields of battle.

Nobody can resist a discarded briefcase

The circled area in the screenshot is a booby trap. The booby trap is a stealthed briefcase containing a large amount of explosives. It costs a mere 100$ and you can place it on neutral tech structures such as turrets, emp centers, tiberium spikes and even on garrisonable structures and bridges.

The briefcase will explode when an enemy unit garrisons/captures the structure, killing any units inside or nearby. If an enemy engineer tries to capture a neutral booby trapped tiberium spike, he won't recieve the 500$ cash bonus as the spike explodes before capture, killing the engineer and levelling the structure entirely.

Where did my Engineer go?

This is a screen shot of a booby trap in action. Notice that it destroyed the tiberium spike completely, so if you are planning to capture it later, you shouldn't place a booby trap. In terms of cost effectiveness, for the cost of 100$ you could potentially eliminate an enemy engineer at a value of 500$ and/or enemy infantry scouts commonly valued between 200$ and 500$ during the early game (where your bombs are most likely to be triggered). As you can plainly see, there shouldn't be any circumstance where your bomb isn't cost effective!

Countering a booby-trapped structure
The trap cannot be detected by stealth detection under any circumstances. However, there is some form of counter play if you have good reflexes. When garrisoning a structure that you suspect may be booby trapped, immediately de-garrison your infantry from the building. You can do this because there is a slight delay of the detonation of the bomb. Therefore if you're fast enough, your units can avoid the explosion.

Structure 2

The above screenshots show some nice examples of good structures to booby trap on everyones favourite, Tournament Rift! These structures are of importance early game to defend spikes from enemy infantry and give good vision of these points on the map, especially structure 2.

That's all for now Commanders, hopefully with this article you'll soon be springing a nasty surprise for your opponent next time they think about taking what belongs to you!
