Tip of the Week #59 - Scrin early game support

By vOddy - 12th May 2009 - 07:13 AM

The scrin have, arguably, the best early game support powers, except for the GDI radar scan which is pretty good. However, they are definitely my personal favorites as far as early game powers go. They are good because they work well in conjunction with each other.

Upon building the Warp Sphere, the scrin gain the ability to summon repair drones. These drones will repair all scrin vehicles and infantry (unfortunately, they do not work on allied units in team games).

As long as they stay within this area, they will be repaired for the duration of the ability. Even if they are in a battle.

A couple of devourer tanks ( Or even seekers, if you are fighting Nod ) with a lightning spike and repair drones at the enemy base can cause a lot of damage.

Upon building the nerve centre, the scrin also receive Ichor Seed, Tiberium Vibration Scan, and The Swarm, apart from Lightning Spike

Ichor Seed is a good power. It creates a miniature tiberium field for you to harvest. If you have cash flow, you should use it as soon as you can, because the faster you use it, the faster you can use it again. If you wait until your tiberium has run out, you will only have gained a little. So if you have good cash flow, use it even if you have plenty of tiberium in your base.

It can also be used on the battlefield if you are in desperate need of ammunition for your devourer tanks, but remember, this could leave the enemy with some free tiberium to harvest.

Tiberium vibration scan costs 300, unless you are Reaper17. Then it's free. It is an intelligence power that reveals tiberium on the map. It will show all tiberium-filled structures as well. If you are Reaper17, you should constantly use it to see where the enemy has expanded and if he has any tib spikes.

If you are not Reaper 17, you will have to pay 300 for this information. However, it is still very useful as it will give you a good idea of his economy (Expansions, refinery count, and in the case of GDI and Scrin opponents, his harvester count).

Use it vs Nod as well, because it will show you if he has a tiberium chemical plant, which is a very critical building with very destructive abilities.

The Swarm. Though this power has been severely nerfed since its debut in Tiberium Wars 1.00, it is still a useful power in the right situations.
For 1500, you can spawn a group of buzzers in a very short time. If the enemy hasn't got much anti infantry, spawn them next to his rocket infantry or disintigrators. Even if he has anti infantry, you could spawn them and use them for a suicide run against his infantry. If you do this, just make sure you either -really- need to kill that infantry, or that you will kill infantry worth more than 1500.

It's also good for killing masterminds and commandos. Spawn them slightly in front of the mastermind while he's running. He will die quickly if you do it right.

Lastly, Infestation. This will create a tiberium hive in the middle of a tiberium field. It is quite expensive (1100) and dies very quickly, so I recommend only using it in conjunction with a lightning spike to harass an undefended expansion, or to kill infantry that are standing on the tiberium field. It does low damage to vehicles on the field, but kills infantry pretty fast.
