The folks over at
Petroglyph have just released an update for the cult classic Star Wars RTS:
Empire at War and its expansion,
Forces of Corruption, ten years after its original launch. As noted, the original game's multiplayer operated off of
Gamespy's servers which shut down in 2014, affecting a whole multitude of other games as well.
In
this press statement released recently, Petroglyph explains that the online multiplayer function has been restored for both Empire at War and Forces of Corruption and will be supported by
Steam. In addition to that, they have included support for
Steam Workshop as well as a host of other bug fixes.
To top it off, Petroglyph and Steam are currently offering the
Star Wars: Empire at War Gold Pack, which features the original game and the FoC expansion, at a 50% discount at $20.00 (prices may differ slightly according to locale).
For those of you like me who had bought the physical version of the game when it first came out, take note, if you were not aware prior to this, that
your CD key that came in the physical packaging cannot be redeemed on Steam for a digital version of the game. As of now there is still no way to transfer the keys over.
For those of you who are not aware of the game and who have only chanced upon it now, do jump in and take advantage of this sale and explore a unique RTS game set in the Star Wars universe that is a successor to the original experience offered by
Star Wars: Rebellion back in the late 1990's.
