Bungie To Change Destiny 2's XP System

Following up on the recent "loot-box" and "micro-transaction" controversy that has been plaguing the games industry recently, with Electronic Arts and Battlefront II having been in the spotlight, it seems another developer is also in hot water with one of its IPs.

Redditor EnergiserX recently posted an analysis over at the Destiny Reddit forum on what he thinks is an attempt by Bungie to limit the XP gained by Destiny 2 players over Level 20.

To put it simply, there is a hidden scaling system that rewards players with more XP when they play Crucible matches or Raids. Conversely, the system will rewards players with lesser XP when they repeatedly play easier and shorter activities like Public Events.

As gamers who play Destiny 2 are aware, after level 20, each time a player fills up his XP bar they are rewarded with a "Bright Engram" which are purchasable with real money and deliver cosmetic upgrades to gamers.

This meant that it took longer for gamers to earn their Bright Engrams if they played repetitive events and with the recent loot-box controversy , gamers suspected this was a ploy on Bungie's part to make gamers buy the Engrams with their own money instead of earning them.

It seems that EnergiserX hit the bull's-eye as not long after, Bungie offered the following statement:

Weve seen community discussion around XP gain in Destiny. After reviewing our data, we agree that the system is not performing the way wed like it to. Today, wed like to describe whats going on under the hood, and talk about what you can expect going forward when it comes to earning XP in Destiny 2.

Currently, XP will scale up when playing longer or fixed duration activities like Crucible competitive multiplayer matches and the Leviathan Raid, and XP will scale down when playing activities that can be quickly, repeatedly chained, like grinding Public Events. We are not happy with the results, and weve heard the same from the community.

Effective immediately, we are deactivating this system.

As a result, players will see XP earn rates change for all activities across the board, but with all values being displayed consistently in the user interface. Over the course of the next week, we will be watching and reviewing XP game data to ensure that these changes meet our expectations, as well as yours. Any additional updates to this system will be communicated to you via our official channels.

As Polygon mentions however, Bungie could have done this scaling system to discourage gamers from "farming" for XP and instead grind it out in the Crucible and the Raid modes.

This would have resulted in the value of the Bright Engrams being reduced as they became easier to earn by simply playing repetitive modes. If that was the case, then the lack of communication by Bungie would be responsible for having them dragged into this situation.
