GameReplays Interviews: Sybert

By cwedvin - 27th February 2021 - 17:07 PM

Greetings Commander! GameReplays Administrator Edvin, on behalf of GameReplays, has had the chance to speak a few words with undoubtedly one of the most successful C&C Caster ever & a former GameReplays.org Section Administrator Sybert! We are delighted to bring you the complete interview in this article. The interview consists of two parts with the first part containing answers to questions asked by GameReplays staff and the second part containing answers to questions asked by fellow community members themselves. The number of questions our fellow community has had for Sybert is astonishing and the vast majority of them have been answered in this interview.

GameReplays: First of all, thank you for making some time for this. Itís wonderful to see you back in the community! Tell us something about yourself. Your name, age, where do you live?

Sybert: My name is Silas and I come from the United States.

GameReplays: What brought you back into casting after being gone for so long?

Sybert: A couple of things. I missed casting and watching C&C, connecting with others in the community. Most of the projects I was working on at my job were not at all creatively fulfilling or even very interesting and most of my personal projects that are more exciting have longer timelines. I missed the fun of releasing lots of videos out to the world.

GameReplays: What brought you into casting for the first time?

Sybert: I used to watch BattleCast PrimeTime and I loved the BattleCast 5 so after working on Community BattleCast PrimeTime for a while and watching SC2 commentators I wanted to give it a try for myself.

GameReplays: Do you feel any different about casting stuff now compared to before?

Sybert: In some ways it feels the same as when I started, but these days I can also get caught in a spiral of cynicism where I am overly critical of the games or my casting performance and I end up trashing the recordings. Then I feel like nothing is good enough and I have to try and get back to a place of just having fun with it.

GameReplays: Your casts are running quite smoothly. Have you changed any game settings perhaps?

Sybert: Yes and no. The smoothness is due to the 60FPS interpolation. I record everything at 30FPS and then when editing in Premiere Pro you just right click on the clip and select Time Interpolation>Optical Flow. Itís not the best interpolation algorithm, but itís good most of the time.

There are different types of interpolation and some companies offer third party tools for other software that does the same thing.

DalK, a producer from SC2 and the FGC, actually developed a system for real time interpolation for live streaming so you can process 30FPS footage up to 60 in real time, but it is pretty hard on resources.

GameReplays: When you left casting a few years ago, you said you wanted to focus on your studies, how did your studies go and what is your line of work now?

Sybert: I actually stopped because I had just finished university and wanted to focus on work. I got a job, and then another job, and now I have a different job. I work for a video production company and we shoot a lot of corporate videos and local ads. I mostly edit video but sometimes I work on set as a camera operator or a best boy in grip and electric.

GameReplays: Do you prefer to cast alone or do you prefer dual casting with people and if so, who would you like to dual cast with?

Sybert: I think I'm better at solo casting, but that's because that's where 99% of my time is spent. I enjoy dual casting, but the constraints of scheduling make it difficult. I like dual casting with GGMachine and Spartacus, but that's also because I just enjoy hanging out with those guys in general.

GameReplays: Have you ever considered playing competitively in any of the games you have casted?

Sybert: I've never wanted to spend the time to get good enough to be competitive, but I like the idea of being good enough, just not enough to make the tradeoffs.

IPB Image

GameReplays: If a new commentator was to show up, what kind of advice would you give him/her?

Sybert: Good audio beats good video, but having both is nice. If you're not having fun you're probably not going to last. If you put in the effort quantity begets quality. Try and create the best experience for the viewer that you can.

Listen to other casters and try and identify what you like and dislike about what they're doing. Watch other commentators or games and see if thereís anything interesting and applicable to your own casts. Watch and critique your own stuff.

IPB Image

GameReplays: What computer setup do you have?

Sybert: My current computer is the first one I haven't built myself. I had this rig built for the editing and video production that I do outside of C&C, so itís overkill for my commentaries.
Ryzen 7 3700X
64 GB of RAM
GTX 1660 Ti
It's all slotted into an ASRock X470 Taichi and I've got two M.2 SSDs and two mechanical drives

GameReplays: Have you thought about rejoining staff and helping out in the community or are you more interested in only casting as you do now?

Sybert: Trying to keep everything as low-commitment and untethered as I can.

IPB Image

GameReplays: What influence did the Command & Conquer franchise have on you?

Sybert: I like RTS games because of C&C, I probably wouldn't have gotten into SC2 without C&C which was my introduction to Esports, and I wouldn't be commentating now.

IPB Image

GameReplays: What is your favorite music genre?

Sybert: I guess film scores. I don't listen to a lot of music and I generally like at least something from most genres, but I listen to film scores the most. A lot of Hanz Zimmer.
