Player Spotlight AwesomeA

By XOUTH - 4th June 2022 - 08:52 AM

Greetings Commanders!

You may recognize him from the golden age of Red Alert 3 in the early twenty-tens: AwesomeA!
XOUTH, on behalf of GameReplays, had the chance to speak a few words with him and brings you the full interview in this article.

IPB Image

GameReplays: Hello AwesomeA, thank you for agreeing to do this! Could we start with you telling us a bit about who you are? Age, general location, what do you do? Be as vague or specific as you like.

AwesomeA: Hey there GameReplays! My name is Andrew. I am 26 years old and from the United States. In real life I work in IT support doing mostly hardware repair.

IPB Image

GameReplays: Do you work, attend school or university, or do you do something else?

AwesomeA: I attended university and graduated back in 2018 with a Bachelor's in Information Technology. I've been working in the field ever since and have enjoyed every second of it.

IPB Image

GameReplays: What are your hobbies, apart from gaming?

AwesomeA: I'm actually a huge sports fan and watch a ton of American football, hockey, and soccer. I also enjoy Sci-Fi films/series and love the outdoors in the summertime.

IPB Image

GameReplays: Tell us one interesting or obscure thing about yourself that we don't know.

AwesomeA: I'm sad to say that despite what my GR username states, I am not a real sheriff.

IPB Image

GameReplays: How did you come up with your nickname?

AwesomeA: When I was a lot younger I had an obsession with creating usernames with my initials attached to the end. Back in 2008 when I first created my name, I actually wanted to be "AgentA" but it had already been claimed. Somewhere along the way I settled on "AwesomeA". I tried changing it up when I got into the competitive scene but by then the name had already stuck.

IPB Image

GameReplays: How long have you played Command and Conquer?

AwesomeA: I've been playing C&C for approximately 15 years now. I was first introduced to RA2 by a cousin and immediately became addicted. It was RA3's release a few years later that brought me into the competitive scene and the C&C community.

IPB Image

GameReplays: Which Command and Conquers have you played competitively in?

AwesomeA: Just Red Alert 3 and Red Alert Remastered. I haven't strayed into the other C&C series very much.

IPB Image

GameReplays: Are you currently active in a Command and Conquer game? Are you playing competitively?

AwesomeA: I continue to play Red Alert Remastered whenever RL isn't clogging up my free time. I do play somewhat competitively and finished #5 in the season that just ended.

IPB Image

GameReplays: Do you play other games besides Command and Conquer?

AwesomeA: I enjoy retro games and play some occasional Rocket League and Age of Empires, but I am nowhere near as active with those as I used to be on C&C. I don't have a ton of time for gaming these days aside from weekends.

IPB Image

GameReplays: What is your favourite aspect of Red Alert 3?

AwesomeA: It's hard to settle on just one, but I would have to say the variety when it comes to strategies. Unlike most RTS games, RA3 offers so many different ways to win competitive matches that the meta is constantly evolving - even as the game reaches the twilight of its lifespan. This is what makes RA3 unique and appealing to re-visit even for players like me that have been absent for extended periods of time.

IPB Image

GameReplays: Why did you decide to main Empire?

AwesomeA: When I really started getting into the competitive play, I found that Empire fit my style the best. I've always preferred the fast, versatile factions with units that encourage aggression over the campier factions with defensive playstyles. Empire was also the dominant faction when I first got into the competitive scene and I was able to learn a lot from the experts that played back then.

IPB Image

GameReplays: What got you into competitive gaming?

AwesomeA:Being a competitive person in general, I like the way that competitive gaming challenges you. Since there are always new strategies and players coming along, it can be quite challenging to remain in the top tier of the player base over a long period of time.

IPB Image

GameReplays: Do you have a least favourite moment? For example, any major fumbles you can think of from your competitive days that you really regret. If so, was there anything you feel you learned from it?

AwesomeA: The moment that instantly comes to mind has to be the Fire Island match against Vindies where he managed to steal 9(!) of my tengus with a spy. Back in those days, many allied players weren't very good at maximizing the allied faction's entire arsenal. It was rare to see spies used in top level play. I went from a very favorable position to an instant loss in the blink of an eye and he's never let me live it down haha.

IPB Image

GameReplays: Do you have a favourite moment?

AwesomeA: I have a lot of favorite moments, but if I had to pick one it would be the time I won my first Ladder Wars tournament. When I was first started playing, I remember watching the live streams of top players fighting it out in Ladder Wars and never thought I would be able to sniff the top 10 of the ladder, let alone qualify for the tournament and actually win. While I lost in far more tournaments than I care to count - being able to win a handful of them was a neat achievement for me.

IPB Image

GameReplays: Is there anything you feel you excelled at? Something that made you stand out?

AwesomeA: I was always a master at EvE matchups. I credit this to Eminence as we used to play a ton of EvEs when I first joined the m8s clan and really getting into the competitive play. Lots of players find EvEs to be just boring 2 ref tengu spam, but I distinguished myself as one of the few players that could make it up to 4-5 refs and win with a variety of different units.

IPB Image

GameReplays: What is your favorite unit and map and why?

AwesomeA: My favorite map is definitely Infinity Isle. It's by far the most balanced map in the 1v1 pool and the strategies you can succeed with there are endless. My favorite unit would have to be the shinobi as they're pretty badass and fun to use.

IPB Image

GameReplays: Are there any players who you particularly enjoyed playing against, be it the fun aspect, their ability to push you to your limits or another factor?

AwesomeA: Unfortunately there are too many for me to count, but if I had to settle on 3 it would be Eminence, Vindies, and Proffloff. Eminence and Proffloff were the players I learned from the most and we used to have some incredible mirror matchups in automatch and tournaments. Vindies was always my kryptonite, but his style and innovations were incredible and always fun to play against.

IPB Image

GameReplays: Who is your most feared opponent? Who was it when you were actively playing back then?

AwesomeA: Definitely Vindies, but I would also include other Allied experts like Walf and YuiYui in there as well. AvE was always the hardest matchup for me and these guys always tended to get the better of me. DanKal was also one of my most feared opponents and is definitely in the conversation for best overall player I've ever faced.

IPB Image

GameReplays: Are there any (up and coming) players you want to highlight?

AwesomeA: Even though I'm inactive and have never personally played against him, I would say that DutchArmy is a new player worth highlighting. He hasn't been around for very long and has already had some success in tournaments.

IPB Image

GameReplays: Any advice to players hoping to become better on how to improve?

AwesomeA: Don't get too down over losing to players that are better than you. Welcome challenges and watch replays from games that you lose to evaluate what your opponent is doing better than you. You become the best only by beating the best.

IPB Image

GameReplays: In a few words tell us what you would change if you had control during Red Alert 3's development.

AwesomeA: A bug fix patch along with a map pool rotation would go a long way in prolonging the game's life. 1v1 automatch has also been sorely missed since it went offline with GameSpy back in 2014.

IPB Image

GameReplays: What would you like to see from the RA3 staff or the RA3 community in the future?

AwesomeA: Just keep up the great work with everything that you've been doing. Having monthly tournaments with cash prizes is amazing and I want to give a huge shoutout to RaGeOfHeAt for his incredible work and dedication to the community for all these years.

IPB Image

GameReplays: How long have you been a member of GameReplays.Org? What's the reason you joined our website?

AwesomeA: I joined GameReplays back in 2010 which is around the time I started playing regularly playing online. We didn't really have Skype or Discord back then, so GameReplays was the place for all Red Alert 3 related content.

IPB Image

GameReplays: What would you say were your major roles in the community? Were you on staff? If so, in which roles?

AwesomeA: I was Red Alert 3's go-to guy for fair play from 2011 to 2014. I started out as a Referee on RA3 staff and eventually became Senior Fair Play Specialist. I also contributed to the development of the C&C:Online by providing the Revora developers with the in-game content they needed to include Red Alert 3 support on their platform.

IPB Image

GameReplays: Do you have messages to the community or shout outs to certain individuals? Do you want to thank certain individuals?

AwesomeA: I want to shout out all of my clan mates that I've played so many games with over the years. Eminence, Vindies, Messican, Walf, Stryderr and Goldeneye just to name a few. I also want to shout out guys like Chris, Kiro, Andrey, and JulzzZ who I became close with over the years. I hope that all of you guys are doing well in wherever life has taken you.

IPB Image

GameReplays: AwesomeA, on our behalf and on behalf of the entire Red Alert 3 community, thanks for your time and this thorough interview!

AwesomeA: Thank you for reaching out! I also want to thank the Red Alert 3 staff for all of your hard work towards the game itself and GameReplays as a whole.
