The Ringwraiths of Mordor

By FriTZZ - 7th November 2010 - 16:35 PM

When to Get Them

You usually get these terrifying Ringwraiths in mid to late game. However, there are some match-ups and situations where you want to consider getting them earlier/later/not at all.

Against Men

Usually all three kinds of Nazgul are OK in this match-up. But if you see your opponent get Fire Arrows or many Rangers at all, don't go for the flying ones. Faramir and Eowyn can be quite a thread to them as well, so keep in mind to avoid fighting these as much as possible.

The Black Riders are especially good because Rohan Spearmen are too weak whereas Tower Guards are too slow to counter them.

All Nazgul are great counters to the powerful Men cavalry. The Witch-king is good in here as well, as long as there are no Fire Arrows. His splash damage slices through any kind of enemy infantry.

Against Elves

Nazgul Riders are fine in this match-up, but you usually shouldn't get Fellbeasts. Mirkwoods deal way too much damage to them. Even if they are dismounted, they die really fast to Mirkwoods. However, if your opponent does rely on mass cavalry and is far from getting Mirkwoods, a Fellbeast might pay off for you.

When your opponent is spamming archers, it's especially good to get Black Riders. They even kill buffed Mirkwood Archers in one trample, and don't take too much damage from them.

Against Dwarves

Unless your opponent spams Men of Dale, Fellbeasts are extremely good in this match-up. You should even consider rushing them to force the enemy to get many archers, because you still can dismount and debuff the Dwarves. Black Riders can do a good harassing job in this match-up, but usually the Dwarven player will have plenty of pikes, so don't get them if you can't afford to keep your spam up.

The Witch-king isn't bad in this match-up either, but you usually want to get one or two Fellbeasts first. When the Witch-king comes out, your opponent will likely have too many heroes or even Fire Arrows, which are great counters to the Witch-king.

Against Isengard

Any archers Isengard can offer have short range and won't be able to reach your Fellbeast if you micro it correctly. However, beware of Axe Throwers, they can deal massive damage to your Nazgul. Just avoid getting near them.

Nazgul Riders are great harassers and will help killing Isengard's strong heroes.

All Nazgul are really really useful in this match-up. You should consider Lurtz's Cripple Shot before dismounting, though.

Against Goblins

Goblin Archers are very weak, so this is the best match-up possible to get Flying Nazgul. Especially the Witch-king is almost impossible to kill with his splash damage and strong armor. But beware of Drogoth, he can easily kill your Fellbeasts!

The Black Riders on the other hand fall pretty fast when they should happen to get stuck in an army of Goblins. And Goblins can just defend their Tunnels against them by sending out some Goblin Warriors, so I would not recommend them here.

Against Mordor

It really depends on the situation which kind of Nazgul you should get in this match-up. If there are a lot of monsters, especially Mumakil which suffer high damage from Fellbeasts, a flying one is great for you. If your opponent has Haradrim Archers or relies on Black Orcs, Black Riders are a good choice.

Against Angmar

Black Riders aren't that good in this match-up because of Fell Wind. Fellbeasts targeting the Thrall Master on the other hand are a huge help. Axe Throwers have short range and Dark Rangers aren't easy to get, so you should consider getting one Fellbeast as soon as possible. But don't let your dismounted Nazgul get caught by Fell Wind!

Especially if your opponent relies on Thrall units, the Witch-king is a great choice here as well, if you can afford him.

Another reason to get Nazgul here is the debuff they provide when dismounted.

Conclusion

As you can see, any Nazgul is a significant thread himself, and is definitely worth getting. Whether against the creepy Orcs, the strong and brave Dwarves or whatever faction you are facing, Nazgul will always do a great job if you use them correctly.

I hope you enjoyed this guide and it's going to help making the shadow of a Fellbeast a more common sight on the battlefields of Middle-earth.
