Tip of the Week #44: 2.02 Knights of Dol Amroth Changes

A very deadly 2.01 unit are the mighty Knights of Dol Amroth. With their extremely high damage and speed, they terrorized their enemies, trampling or destroying anyone in their path. Even Gimli was afraid to venture out from his Phalanx bodyguards to confront these elite cavalry units alone.

Knights of Dol Amroth were extremely useful in 2.01. Perhaps too useful. They were easily capable of sneaking into a base with their high speed to quickly level a Fortress and nearby structures with their very high damage. If the base was not very well protected, it was almost impossible to survive against them. In short, they were quite overpowered offensively. The unofficial 2.02 patch has reduced the strength of these dangerous cavalry units in several ways so that they are still worthy to be considered mini hero hordes, but are no longer overpowered. They were also strengthened in a few other areas. The following list shows the changes that were made to these units:
  • Cost decreased from 1500 resources to 1200 resources.
  • Damage was decreased from 250 to 200.
  • 65% damage scalar vs. heroes was added, resulting in Knights of Dol Amroth dealing less damage to heroes.
  • They can no longer be trampled by certain enemy cavalry units.
  • Crush deceleration reduced from 30% to 20%. This causes them not to slow down as fast as they did in 2.01 whilst trampling units.
  • They can no longer trample trees or other inappropriate objects.
  • Their Inspiration ability tooltip now correctly indicates that it only affects Gondor Knights and Rohirrim, not all cavalry units.
  • No longer affected by Buffs and Spells such as Rallying Call and Theoden's Glorious Charge. They are now only affected by their own Glorious Charge ability.
Although most of these changes nerf these units, they are still formidable cavalry. They are still good at countering enemy cavalry, harassing, and at sneak attacks. While not as overpowered as they were in 2.01, they're still the most powerful cavalry unit in the game. The idea behind these changes was to prevent them from being an invincible machine of destruction. In 2.01 they could easily destroy something quickly and retreat before you could catch them. In 2.02, they are more balanced.


How to use Knights of Dol Amroth


As mentioned above, what the Knights of Dol Amroth excel at most is harassing; of course they're good for killing heroes as well, but heroes are usually protected by pikes. They are by far one of the fastest units in the game, and when combined with some Rohirrim, can take down a Fort in less than a minute. They deal a high amount of damage, but their armour is significantly reduced so they can't solo Forts on their own anymore (many would consider this a massive improvement to the game).

If any heroes are on their own, maybe retreating from battle, the Knights of Dol Amroth can hunt them down and kill them before reinforcements can come to help them.


When to Purchase Knights of Dol Amroth


The ideal match-ups to get the Knights of Dol Amroth are versus Elves, Men, Dwarves, Goblins and Mordor. Isengard and Angmar can adapt too quickly to your Knights and often end up killing them before they can do any damage.

Since Men mirrors usually consists of hero spam and cavalry (both which the Knights brilliantly counter) they are ideal here. Just use them to defend against enemy cavalry and harass any outlying farms. Bring them into a battle near the end, to focus down his enemy heroes and archers.

Elves is obvious: Mirkwoods. Mirkwood Archers have long been the bane of many a Men player; however, with the Knights of Dol Amroth on your side, they shouldn't really be a problem. They're also an excellent counter to heroes such as Legolas and Glorfindel.

Dwarves, ah yes, the stubborn bearded midgets. Far too easy to harass with the Dol Amroth extraordinaires to ignore. Take the time and resources to invest in them and watch the Dwarf player cry on the floor as you destroy his economy. The only counter Dwarves have versus the Knights of Dol Amroth is Brand; beware him popping out of a Mine.

Goblins and Mordor are once again two other factions which are self explanatory: they spam. Cavalry spam is and always will be efffective against these two foes, and the Knights of Dol Amroth are no different. Use them to your advantage. Beware the flyers though; once they appear, play more conservatively.


Overall the Knights of Dol Amroth, whilst not being the force they were in 2.01 (hero killing, pike slaying, Fortress rushing units of death) are still not to be underestimated. Try them out and watch the carnage they bring with them.
