How to unlock higher graphic detail

By Kibatsu - 16th November 2009 - 20:05 PM

Normally the Dawn of War games use lower graphic details when playing in either a Skirmish or a Multiplayer Game. With a little tweaking you can enable higher levels of detail, which are normally only used in the Campaign Mode.

The difference can be seen on the following screenshots. The images on the left show what the units and buildings look per default without the tweaks; the images on the right side show what it looks like when you are using the tweaks.

-forcehighpoly

The first tweak is to add the -forcehighpoly parameter to your Dawn of War: Soulstorm shortcut (this also works for the original Dawn of War and all expansions (Winter Assault and Dark Crusade)):
  1. If you do not have a shortcut on your desktop you need to create one first. In order to do this, go to your Dawn of War. Soulstorm installation folder (i.e. C:\Games\THQ\Dawn of War - Soulstorm) using your file explorer.
  2. Find the Soulstorm.exe (or W40k.exe for the original Dawn of War, W40kWA.exe for Winter Assault or DarkCrusade.exe for Dark Crusade)
  3. Left-click on the file and drop it on your desktop while holding the ALT-key on your keyboard in order to create a shortcut.
    If you already have a shortcut on your desktop you can skip these points.
  4. Right-click on the shortcut and select "Properties".
  5. Go to the "Target" line and add -forcehighpoly to the of the line (i.e. "C:\Games\THQ\Dawn of War - Soulstorm\Soulstorm.exe" -forcehighpoly)
    Make sure you are placing the parameter outside of the quotation marks!

fullres_teamcolour=1

The second tweak is to add the fullres_teamcolour=1 line to your local.ini file:
  1. Go to your Dawn of War: Soulstorm installation folder (i.e. C:\Games\THQ\Dawn of War - Soulstorm) using your file explorer.
  2. Select the local.ini file (in case you have disabled to show the file extensions it will just be called "local") and open it with Notepad / Editor.
  3. Copy and paste the fullres_teamcolour=1 as the last line and save and close the local.ini.
    If the local.ini file already contains a fullres_teamcolour=0 line just change the 0 to 1 and save and close the file.

Please keep the warning from the Readme.txt in mind:

2. TEAM COLOR MIP LEVELS

Currently, the default texture settings for Team Color are optimized to account for AGP bandwidth issues that may occur during online multiplayer games with more than 4 players.

To over-ride this extra level of mip dropping and view the team colors at maximum texture quality, add the following line to your Root\Local.ini file:

fullres_teamcolour=1

Please note that this setting is not officially supported, and may result in severe performance issues. It should not be attempted unless you have a very high-end system (1024MB of RAM and a 256MB graphics card).

Tweaking and Performance Issues in Multiplayer Games
This means do NOT use these tweaks when you are playing in Multiplayer Mode, if your computer cannot even handle the minimum hardware requirements, otherwise you are going to lag and other players will most likely kick you from the round.

You have been warned.
