5 Reasons Why StarCraft 2 Has Taken So Long

By Mr.Scatacs - 22nd March 2010 - 01:42 AM

StarCraft first came out in 1998 and its popularity has lasted the 12 years past. In 2007 it was announced that StarCraft 2 would be coming out, but when? No one was sure on that subject, and if you are a fan of Blizzard you know their notorious reputation of being vague with dates. But this is a good thing, Blizzard does not want their fans getting their hopes up on a certain game by building up this giant hype of anticipation and letting them down by never releasing a game. But don't worry Blizzard has never done this! Oh, StarCraft Ghost...

StarCraft fans have been wondering lately about StarCraft 2, "What took so long?". StarCraft 2 is finally in its beta though, and the mid 2010 release is looming large on the horizon. Hopefully. With a catch-phrase like "Hell, it's about time", Blizzard is obviously aware the entire community of StarCraft has been chewing at the bit in anticipation for this one game.

Top 5 Reasons Why StarCraft 2 Took So Long to Come Out:

1) 10 Million People Can't be Wrong:

Sometime before 2004 some guy came up with the ingenious idea to make WarCraft into an RPG based loosely on what fans of WarCraft came to love, known as DoTA, or to give it its probably lesser known, full name, Defense of the Ancients. Basically, DoTA is a dungeon-crawler-RPG-RTS-kick-ass game that was created by some guy who was really bad at WarCraft and wanted a new game. It became such a hit that Blizzard quickly caught notice and "invented" World of WarCraft. Because they "invented" this "brand new" game that have never been done before, many lives were instantly lost in this "brand new" world. "Inventing" this game was a break through because it was basically the first dungeon-crawler-RPG-epic-majestic-kick-ass game of its time. Right? They didn't copy anyone. Their idea of World of WarCraft is completely different from DoTA, isn't it? That's not the point. The point is, is that this has been the project that Blizzard has been working for ever since, why stray from what works. With 10 million lives lost to this game it became the crack of the virtual world and it is legal to use! With all of Blizzard's attention on this, focusing on something that doesn't make billions of dollars at a time seemed worthless. With the name 'World of WarCrack', you know it has to be good.

Blizzard has spent so much time on the World of WarCraft series over the years since it first came out in 2004. Eventually creating such expansions like, The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King which have all done better than the last generating millions for the Blizzard company. With the announcement of the new expansion, Cataclysm, it can expected to do even better, but finally Blizzard is focusing on Starcraft 2, even though it has taken so long.

2. Too Many Games of Beer Balance:

When an in depth interview of the Blizzard design team for StarCraft 2 by Jace Hall, we saw first hand how these guys really work. Creating balance in all the races and each unit is one of the hardest thing for Blizzard to do because no one wants to play a game where either you can't win as your favourite race or winning as your least favourite race doesn't seem fulfilling. So how does Blizzard take care of this problem of balance? They drink until it makes sense.

With hot debates over 'WarCraft in Space' and important issues as to whether or not mohawks should be in this game, it's no wonder StarCraft 2 has taken so long. Now lets think about how many beers they must have drunk to come up with what they have so far in StarCraft 2! And what if they ran out of beers!? What if they ran out of money!? Did they have to rely on the World of WarCraft team to bring in all the money so they could buy more beers!? You know WarCraft and StarCraft aren't making money like WoW. These are the important issues that Dustin Browder must think about during the design of StarCraft 2. When asked about beer balancing, this is what they had to say:
I'm drunk right now!

Wise words, indeed.

3. Designing StarCraft Ghost 2:

Nah, just joking, they didn't even get the first one out. Blizzard got the hopes of so many people out there with a game that sounded so kick-ass and amazing and great and orgasmic and flabbergasticable, and then it never came out. Back in the day of the Xbox it could have been a game to rival Halo with its online capabilities. But now we will never know.

Looked pretty cool for its day, huh? Too bad. Blizzard never came out with StarCraft Ghost, and will probably never come out with StarCraft Ghost 2 but I like to think they have been doing something useful over these past 12 years, but then again, maybe not.

4. The Design Team Toured with Samwise Didier... for 12 Years!

Samwise Didier is best known for his singing abilities in the song Level 80 Elite Tauren Chieftain and he sure does rock hard. Samwise Didier is the art director for StarCraft 2 and without him we would be looking at a game with uncreative pixels that resemble humans, bugs, and aliens that don't get our hearts pumping and our minds racing with excitement. So, you have to understand how this 12 year tour might have put a damper in the creative process on StarCraft 2. Sex, drugs and rock and roll can take a huge toll on the human mind. But finally Samwise has put on pants, headed to Blizzard HQ, and got to work on this marvellous project. Although he didn't actually tour for 12 straight years, Samwise Didier will always be a rock god to World of Warcraft players.

Rock on Samwise!

5. Blizzard is Tired of Listening to People Complain:

Since StarCraft 2 was first introduced back in 2007 people have been complaining about one thing after another about this game. Now imagine the world complains about every little thing you do, I bet it would get annoying. Now what would you do if everyone was pestering you? You'd figure out a way to get back at them, huh? Blizzard apparently has done the same to us as well! If people would just shut up about how "there aren't enough units", or "the graphics are lacking", maybe Blizzard would like the community more. Blizzard, I feel your pain and also wish these naggers would stop. I bet Blizzard would be frustrated with all the same complaints and this is just their way to spite us all. Now people, the units in StarCraft 2 are unique in every way and adding more units to each race at this stage would only cause balance issues, and Dustin Browder can't pay for another trip to the hospital for alcohol poisining. Now people, the graphics in StarCraft 2 are amazing in every way, they are ten times better than StarCraft and will blow many a mind away. I think its a matter of your computer can't run StarCraft 2's graphics and you are frustrated and just want someone to complain to. Now people, if you didn't complain so much about the time, graphics, and units, maybe it would have been out earlier. Maybe...

Conclusion

It has taken many years for the design team to get StarCraft 2 worthy to be released because every one of them is a perfectionist and want it to be in tip-top shape for their fans. We have to wait a little longer for it to be released, and no one can wait but we love nearly everything Blizzard does and nothing will change that. Maybe a Beta key might make a few of us love them even more. You never know... All jokes aside, Blizzard is doing a wonderful job and I couldn't love them any more than I already do.
