Starcraft 2 Beta Key Competition - Best of the Rest

By Trojan. - 14th March 2010 - 13:38 PM

Layos

Warm. Wet. Dark.

That were the first sensory perceptions the little one had during its birth. A strange green and yellow glow permeated through the layers of its cocoon. It was the light of a star burning down on the dire planes of this planet, adding to the heat and flames of war. Sounds of explosions and flying projectiles filled the air, bones and flesh bursting accompanied by screams of agony - a deafening, thunderous event occurring on the outside. It all was so damped down inside his little cradle of warmth, it almost sounded peaceful; like fireworks from a large distance. A place seemingly so far away from battle, yet so much in the middle of it.

“Who am I?”

This little creature had conscious thoughts of his surroundings. Quickly it realized its own rapid evolution. His own body changing and mutating during painful metamorphosis. It suddenly started to recall its past. Images of battle and fierce combat. It remembered that it was warrior, one of the very few to have survived the massacre of its hive by the humans. Anger and rage filled its thoughts. That’s
when it heard the voice.

“You belong to me. As I granted you your life, you will obey me and die at my command.”

The voice was crystal clear and cold, very familiar. It heard this voice before. It felt like it were his own thoughts, like the voice came from inside its mind. The sheer vehemence of it made it impossible to ignore. Fear struck the creature and froze it to the core. “What is happening to me?” it asked itself. Again, with an aura of supreme power it echoed inside his mind: “My children, it is time”. The anxiety was unbearable as the little Zerg shook and squirmed with fear. A few moments later, cracks appeared on the inner wall of the cocoon, and spread fast, like branches of a tree of light. Its mouth and carapace started to dry out quickly, as the heat from outside fully invaded its little chamber.

There it stood now, his cocoon had collapsed around him, leaving him bare and unprotected to the world. But it was not alone. As far as his eyes could see, others like him started to breed. But they were different. They hissed and rattled with aggression and ferocity. They were looking straight ahead, over to the horizon where gigantic armies of steel approached with unrelenting speed. That’s when it finally realized its role in this battle.

“I’m not going to die here.”

It started to make his way back through seemingly thousands of his kind, still shaking with fear.
That’s when he saw something shiny in a ground crack. It was something made of gold, it looked like a key.

Suddenly pure joy filled his heart like it was going to explode…. the unstable, glowing payload on his back, pulsating and vibrating with sheer anticipation, ready to burst.

“A StarCraft 2 beta key!!!”

Boom.
