Review of Unconquerable vs. Ftang on Winters Duel

First thing's first - I liked this replay. It wasn't the most entertaining, nor was the play spectacular, but it was a good replay. We have some typical mistakes and also some interesting tactical choices. To start off, Ftang starts on the advantaged east side (left) and making good use of this advantage, and Unconquerable on the disadvantaged west side, who does well keeping up with Ftang. Unconq gets a single mech marine off from his first factory and then starts making engineers and Ftang decides to skip light bots for harassment and instead uses his comm to take out the incoming mech marine and moves him forward to cap some mex and reclaim some of the larger rocks. Ftang is first to get air units and quickly dispatches from bombers to Unconquerable's base and does some decent damage, taking out some pgens, but Unqonquerable gets an air fac of his own up and starts pumping out interceptors. With a battle going for control of the center between Ftangs comm + artillery and Unconq's comm + strikers/lobos. This battle goes back and forth for about 4 minutes until Ftang gets a slight upper-hand and starts really pushing into unconq's territory, but Unconquerable has an ace up his sleeve and unleashes about a half dozen fighters and bombers on Ftangs base, which practically stops Ftangs production and eliminates Ftangs ints as soon as they leave the pad. Unconquerable then targets Ftangs arty push and comm, eliminating the incoming threat and helping drop Ftangs comm to ~450hp. Ftang's comm somehow survives when all Unconquerables bombers are destroyed by mobile AA, while this is in progress, Ftang finishes his t2 factory upgrade and starts making some mobile t2 AA, which decimates all of Unconquerables air units. During Ftang's t2 upgrade, Unconquerable took advantage of the stop in Ftangs land unit production, pushing all the way to the edge of Ftang's plateau. Ftang is able to get some obsidian t2 tanks out to fight off Unconquerables incoming lobos (I think there were some strikers mixed in there too). This is happening while Ftang takes advantage of the absense of air units and gets bombers and fighters off to harass Unconquerables base. The battle continues to rage back and forth, but Ftang eventually uses his economic advantage to hit t3 first and out-produce Unconquerable in t3 (Unconq hit t3 about 30 seconds later, but didn't have the economy to keep up - or at least didn't utilize his economy as well as Ftang did at this point). Once t3 units start to appear, the game lasts about 3 more minutes, ending when Unconquerable walk his comm within range of a couple of harbs, which make quick work of him, ending the game. All around good game and some smart tactical choices by Ftang.

Unconquerable

+ Used hydrocarbon adjancy bonus for air factory to save some resources, good choice.
+ Used lapse in Air Dominance by Ftang to get bombers in to kill his power.
+ Used tanks + artillery effectively, along with your bombers and ints, to push Ftangs assault back and cause problems for him.
- Only 4 engineers until about the 10 minute mark (others could have been killed, but I didn't notice any).
- Fell behind in mex upgrades, and at time had spare mass or enough in storage.
- Questionable placement of your t2 pgen, made it an easy target for Ftangs artillery.
- Shield could have been a good choice for your t3 factory, could have protected it long enough to match Ftangs t3 bot numbers and allowed you to counter Ftangs t3 arty.
- Excess mass in the last few minutes that wasn't utilized through mex upgrades or building.
- Marched your comm into incoming harbingers, which possibly was to get away from Ftangs t3 arty, but I don't think he knew your comm was there, you could have moved him the other way.

5/10

Overall pretty good play by Unconquerable, however, you did make some mistakes that cost you the game, namely not keeping up with Ftang economically, which didn't allow you to capitalize on the times you had air dominance.

Ftang

+ Used your advantageous position to get ahead early.
+ Air first to harass Unconquerables power production.
+ First t2 Mex and kept an economic advantage the whole way through by upgrading often and keeping power output sufficient.
+ Regained air dominance to continue harassing Unconquerables economy.
+ Good choice to go t2 mobile AA instead of trying to get the job done with t1 AA. This also let you get ahead of Unconquerable enough to get some t2 pd and obsidians up to hold off Unconquerables offensive until you could put together a counterattack.
+ First to t3 and used some t3 artillery to make Unconquerable pay for the placement of his t3 factory and t2 pgens near the middle of the map.
- No flare(s) for early harassment? This may or may not have had an affect on the game, though.
- Lost air dominance after you were first to air and paid for it by losing lots of power.
- Some Auroras could have helped protect your artillery from Unconquerable's strikers and lobos that drove back your first offensive around the 7th minute.
- You were pretty careless with your comm around 8:30, almost losing him to Unconquerables counter attack and his bombers. You were down to ~450hp and stayed sub 1000hp for, what I think, was way too long.

7/10

Ftang played very well here. He made a few mistakes that could have cost him and put him at a huge disadvantage, but he was able to overcome these mistakes with good strategic choices that kept him in the game. In the end he focused on beating Unconquerable by destroying his production and economy rather than trying to overwhelm him with t3 bots. Great play here!

Overall: 6/10

An ok game. But short, doesnt take ftang long to win this one as unconq makes his t3 factory in a retarded position.

I don't get what the hell happened. The game ended before 5 minutes. I assume Unconq quit did he? It just said "game over" seconds after Ftang brought the bombers over.

I think you have a corrupted file, cause it went about 15 minutes.

Ftang got to T3 first, and therefore had T3 bots before Unconquerable. If Unconquerable had taken time out to move his commander/engineers back to backline to build that T2 power plant and T3 fac, he would have given Ftang even more of a lead on SAB production.

I do think the T2 power plant placement was a little silly, but I don't think building it in his forward base was all that out of line.

Unconquerable put his t2 pgen up (and that factory) a few minutes before either of them went t3, there was plenty of time for him to build both of them in better places.
