Very good start for you both, but I think he lost it when he decided to mass Muskets rather than go age 3 and play for Skirmishers. Fact is French Muskets cannot beat Jap Muskets, so it looks like the only real French option. Villager ships helped you to edge it, but really the Musket-massing threw it and after the first major loss he would never have the mass to fight back again.
