In Germany LAN's are alot bigger than that, i'd say there were hundreds and hundreds of people there competing in many big competitions with big prizes (expensive computer hardware etc). And the lan goes over a couple of days nonstop.

This was a small LAN, only around 250 people were there .
my biggest lan party included 10 guys (2 was only devastating our vodka suplys, rest had computers but we quited playing after 4 hours of starcraft and changed lan party into grill party:)
prizes were big headaches next day, we all won

yeah it was a nice game, (for my standarts, i think almost every game here is nice) it showed me how to get a secure oil grap, lol everytime i do one, i get shredded
