Yeah wow you're late at getting the news From what I gathered, it got axed because the project wasn't feasible on several levels. Basically the community who played the alpha weren't impressed by the lack of a single player experience. Also the game was designed to follow a free-to-play model and so people would end up buying extra generals and powers etc...which clearly would have been a NIGHTMARE to balance. It is to be developed by another studio at some point though, because EA are too greedy not to milk a popular franchise.
Maybe AGM's take on the matter will be more accurate though
Eh, lots of bullshit. EA, being the big company it is, doesn't exactly have a unified vision of games. So when EA did some executive shuffling around, the new executives probably didn't have as much faith in a free to play RTS as the previous executives did.
Whatever their reasons for shutting the game down were, I can tell you from the perspective of a fan / alpha player that the game needed a fucking lot of work to be anywhere near half the game Zero Hour was. While it had potential to be awesome if had a lot more time, where it stood at the time of cancellation was quite bad (again, just speaking from the perspective of a fan/Zero Hour zealot )
One of these days I will write a proper overview of everything wrong with that game, but I can't be arsed to do that right now. It would take too long.
What happened with the new Generals, I just saw that it was canceled.
