C&C 4 Effective Turtle Guide

By Doctor Müller - 10th April 2010 - 00:56 AM

Upgrade picking

Playing as a turtle means you have little use for the tier one upgrades as none of them have effect on your defenses. The best strategy is to go straight for tier two which will allow you to construct more powerful defenses and upgrade the ones you already had. After tier two the most important upgrade is the defensive matrix, this will grant you the strongest shield in the game and help a lot if you are under attack. Closely following comes the enhanced repairs, this will increase the repair radius of your crawler and heal the units that are in it faster, it also repairs your defenses so it's a solid choice.
Only one thing rests now, getting to tier three and grab the enhanced shield, doubling the strength shields of your Crawler and Shield Towers and add even more power to the GDI Tunnel. The rest is free choice, if you make an offensive move before you hit tier three you might want to grab some of the other upgrades first.

What to do after turtling

So you're sitting nice and cozy, you've fended off the enemies attacks and they seem to have accepted that you're here to stay. What to do now?
  • First thing to think of is to move your defenses up ahead closer to their spawn location, taking more map control is always a good thing
  • Second comes Tiberium runs, you can give your full attention to Tiberium runs now, giving a technological advantage to your whole team is a thankful job and surely will result in pat on the back.
  • Build your Super Weapon and blast your enemies to bits. Use it only against engaged forces or fixed defenses or else the animation warning will provides enough time for observing players to evacuate their forces. Unlike previous C&C titles, in CnC4 Super Weapons won't harm allied forces, so don't hold back.
  • Frontal assault, You may want to do this before you start turtling as well. After all, defense is the best offense (or was it the other way around?). Use the Defense Stacking technique to create a solid foothold in hostile territory, if the turrets pop up they will make your opponent drop down.
  • Or... go with an entirely different class. Flexibility is the selling point of the game for a reason!
To beat the turtle, be the turtle
The Defensive classes have the largest variety of units dealing blast damage, effective against reinforced armour. If you face a heavily fortified position, consider picking the defensive faction.
