Your number one unit for gathering resources (aside from the MULE) and constructing buildings as Terran. You will not be able to do anything without having the support of your workforce - the SCVs. They have the largest hit-point pool of the three races' workers, which makes them just a little bit less susceptible to raiding and more potent in battle if it comes to that. You can train SCVs from your Command Center. They have no other special abilities other than being able to harvest minerals, vespene gas, build buildings and repair mechanical objects.
