The Zergling is the earliest Zerg offensive unit, it is weak alone but a swarm of Zerglings can be very deadly, especially when upgraded. This makes sure the Zergling stays an important unit throughout the game. The Zergling is unique in that they spawn in pairs from one Larva and they cost only half a control point. This makes it an ideal unit for early rushes or mid-game massing.
Considered the main fighting unit and meat shield in Starcraft 1, its role in Starcraft 2 remains relatively unchanged. An additional ability, Morph to Baneling, has been added, so the Zergling can be quickly converted into a lesser version of the Starcraft 1 Infested Terran.
